Warren Gatland Embraces Underdog Role as Wales Prepare for Six Nations Challenge :
Over the years, Warren Gatland has become accustomed to attending the annual Six Nations launch, knowing that his Wales team would typically be considered one of the frontrunners for the Championship. However, this time was different. As he posed for photos alongside the other coaches at the iconic Colosseum in Rome on Tuesday, Gatland found himself in an unfamiliar and somewhat humbling position: that of the underdog.
For the first time in many years, Wales is widely predicted to finish at the bottom of the Six Nations standings in 2025, having endured a winless campaign the previous year that saw them claim the dreaded wooden spoon. In addition, Gatland's side has suffered 12 consecutive losses in international Tests, a stark contrast to the team's once-strong reputation. Despite these setbacks, Gatland remained resolute and determined.
As he left the Colosseum, a venue steeped in Italian history and known for its gladiatorial contests, Gatland appeared ready to embrace the challenge ahead. He made it clear that he would welcome the return of Louis Rees-Zammit to the team and was confident that Wales' underdog status could work to their advantage.
“We’re in a nice position,” he said. “There is no expectation. People are writing us off.” Gatland took a defiant stance, reminiscent of his comments before the World Cup, where he urged people not to underestimate his team. “I said before the World Cup, write us off at your peril. I’ll say the same again now.” His words reflected a sense of defiance and a belief that, with the odds stacked against them, Wales could rise to the occasion once again.
